Allegri admits he expected a different Juventus this season

Massimiliano Allegri has admitted that injuries have derailed his plans for Juventus’ first-team lineup this season, forcing him to deviate from his original vision.

The coach has faced mounting pressure, particularly after Juventus’ disappointing 2-1 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League. Many fans criticized the Bianconeri’s lackluster performance, with some arguing the scoreline could have been worse.

In response to the criticism, Allegri defended himself, revealing that he had envisioned a much stronger Juventus squad this summer following the signings of Angel Di Maria and Paul Pogba. However, persistent injury issues have prevented him from fielding his ideal lineup.

Allegri explained his initial vision, which included a midfield trio of Pogba, Paredes, and Rabiot, with Locatelli as a key alternative. Up front, he envisioned a dynamic attacking trio of Di Maria, Chiesa, and Vlahovic.

“I’m disappointed with this situation and sometimes wonder if I’ve made mistakes,” Allegri told Corriere dello Sport (via TuttoJuve).
“I had a different Juventus in mind. My midfield idea was Paredes, Pogba, and Rabiot, with Locatelli as the main alternative.”
“In attack, I imagined Di Maria and Chiesa on the wings, with Vlahovic as the center-forward.”

Allegri also acknowledged the team’s struggle to create in the final third, a key reason for signing Di Maria and Pogba.

“We don’t have many players who can create in the final third, which is why we brought in Di Maria and Pogba. We’re also working on Miretti for that role, but he’s still young and not at Pogba’s level yet.”

The coach’s comments highlight the challenges Juventus face as they navigate a difficult season plagued by injuries and inconsistent form.
